MECASU Project

The US-Pacific coast provides a type-area of subduction-zone paleoseismology because the regional estuarine marshes overlie a Holocene sediment record of land-level changes and tsunami deposition during many megathrust paleo-earthquakes. Despite the large amount of studies, the hazard of great earthquakes and tsunamis on the US-Pacific coast is uncertain and a better assessment is needed to help prevent huge property and human losses. Earlier microfossil studies have shown the great potential of quantitative microfossil reconstructions for providing quantitative estimates of the land-level changes during past great earthquakes but such estimates are available only for a few of the most recent earthquakes at a few sites along the US-Pacific coast.

Within this DFG project, funded from 2012 to 2014, modern and fossil benthic foraminiferal records from two marshes in southern Oregon were studied in close cooperation with colleagues from the Rutgers University, the University of Long Island, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). To quantitatively reconstruct past earthquake-induced land-level changes, transfer functions using modern benthic foraminiferal assemblages were developed and their performance was evaluated, finally allowed a better assessment of the magnitude of late Holocene earthquakes at the Cascadia subduction zone.
